This is one of the most asked questions I've come across in my 6 years dealing with clients who are about to pop the big question to the love of their lives. It usually comes at the end of the discussion, after all the diamond and the setting have been decided. It seems that most people tend to overlook the fact that there won't be any ring without the ring size!
If you plan to have a surprise proposal, asking her directly is definitely not an option. So let me give some tips that I've gathered from my experiences helping these clients over the years.
1. Ask her bff or a family member
Best friend forever knows. They just do. Even if they don't, her best friend and family will be more than happy to be your confederate (don't forget to swear them to secrecy). I've witnessed a friend who went to the extent of buying a new ring as a present so he could use that as an excuse to ask for her ring size. Another scenario is to ask your confederate to go window shopping with her and try on some rings at the jewellery shop for fun.
2. Borrow her own ring
Secretly, for sure. Do make sure that the ring is the one she wears on the ring finger of her left hand, or you might end up with a ring that is too loose or worse, too small to even go in. Once you have it, draw the outline of the ring on a piece of paper, measure its diameter and match it with the ring size chart that's available on Google. If you think she might notice when the ring goes missing, try to put the ring on your finger and mark the place where the ring fits. With that, put a piece of small cut out paper around your finger mark and measure the paper's length. Or you can simply go to the jeweller and have them measured the size for you.
3. Compare your finger
Put your hands side by side and snap a close up picture of it. You may impress her as being a romantic and best of all, it will help the jeweller to determine the ring size by comparing it with your size. This method might not be as accurate as the others, but you will at least get a measurement that is not to far off.
These few tips help my clients to get their sizes subtly without ruining the surprise, and I can confidently say none of the rings failed to go into the finger during the final moment. However, there are some key points to take notes:
The size of our left hand is not the same as the right; and the size of the dominant hand is slightly bigger. Engagement ring is located at the ring finger on the left hand, so make sure to get the correct ring size.
Ring with wider band will need a slightly bigger fit.
Not all ring can be resize. If you decided to get an engagement ring with a full eternity diamond on the band, it's best to bring your partner for a size fitting before the completion of the ring.
When in doubts, always go bigger. You want a ring that can goes into the finger on your proposal day, so bigger is always better.
